If you would like a little splash of color in your winter garden, I have found that here in the DC area you can have viola and pansy blooms all throughout the winter.

I grew these violas from seed. I started them inside in late August and planted them outside about a month ago. This can be a great way to get a lot of plants for just a few dollars.

Violas and pansies are part of the cool flowers family. I’ll be hosting a cool flowers workshop in late January where you can start your own cool flowers from seed to get some gorgeous spring blooms.

Loving this Bracken dahlia duo this season - Bracken Palamino and Bracken Sarah. They both have large 6 inch blooms and a surprisingly long vase life. When I harvest them before they are fully open, I have found they open beautifully in the vase.

If you want to get a longer vase life from your homegrown dahlias, right after you harvest them put them in a solution of warm water and flower food. Let them sit in that solution for at least a few hours up to 24 hours before arranging.

You’ll be enjoying your blooms for a day or two more. And let’s face it, we all could use a little more time with these beauties right about now! 😊

A little flower power to brighten up this Labor Day morning!

It’s that time of the season when a lot of our plants are going to seed, which means it is a great time to harvest seeds for next season!

If you have some basil that was left to flower and the flower pods are starting to brown, you can get dozens of seeds from just one plant!

Just cut the spent stem and rub the flower pods with your fingers so the seeds drop out. I do this over a white envelope in which I will store the seeds, so I can see the seeds clearly. I find that stems with some green pods on them have the most seeds left in the brown pods.

Label and store the envelope in a cool dry place and you will be all set for basil seeds for next summer!

Next summer, you can either start your basil seeds indoors in a seed tray or direct seed them after last frost. Let me know if you have any questions!

Evening sunflower harvest! When you’re harvesting sunflowers for a bouquet, it is best to harvest them when just a few petals are lifting off the face of the sunflower. This helps make sure you get the flower before any critters have had a chance to chew on it. The sunflowers will open up beautifully for you in the vase! 🌻

When growing dahlias it’s important to make sure to give them proper support as they get taller. I had a bed of dahlias that I had supported at a lower height before leaving for vacation. When I came back, they had grown so much beyond that lower support that they toppled over. This leaves you with crooked stems that aren’t very usable in bouquets.

When you give your dahlias proper support, they grow nice long straight stems (like the one in the second clip) that can be used in bouquets. As you can see, I had to cut off the twisted part of the stems from the first set of dahlias and ended up with some short stems. They look lovely in a short little vase, but if you’re looking for something more versatile, don’t forget to support your dahlias!

Here are a couple native plants that I love to grow as filler for bouquets. They add a bit of magic to arrangements and are great for your garden and local ecosystem!

The first is mountain mint. It doesn’t spread as aggressively as other mint and is a great pollinator magnet.

The other is false sunflower, with its medium sized cheerful yellow blooms, it not only attracts pollinators, but its deep root system helps improve soil structure.

And as native plants, you can plant them in poor soil and pretty much leave them alone. They will come back year after year for your enjoyment.

I grew both of these plants from seed, but you can also find them at a local garden center that carries native plants.

A bouquet with these beauties makes you feel like you are walking through a summer meadow! 🥰❤️

Even though I have lived in DC for close to 30 years, the Mall never gets old. While I always love to take in the views of the monuments, some of my favorite spots are in the gardens surrounding the Smithsonian museums.

While my son was at running practice on the Mall this evening, I got to enjoy a little solo garden walk. I am grateful to all of the gardeners who give our city and its visitors this treasure and beauty. ❤️
