A little ranunculus hoop check. When the arctic blast was coming, I was worried that my ranunculus would not survive with just row cover over them, so I covered them up with a hoop of plastic to create more of a greenhouse effect. They seem to have survived the cold weather very well!

Now that the weather has gotten a bit warmer, it’s important to air out the hoops on warm days. The ranunculus will not do well if they get too hot, as they prefer growing in cooler conditions.

Can’t wait to harvest these beauties this spring!

Here is a cheap, easy homemade alternative to plastic seedling pots! You can either start seeds in these or bump up your seedlings to these when they need a larger container to grow some more before being planted out into the garden. When it comes time to plant them out, you can either take them out of the newspaper or plant it with the newspaper, as a biodegradable container.

Here are some of the seeds I am starting right now in DC, which is Zone 7b/8a!

I am starting a second round of cool season annuals for early spring planting. Some cool season annuals are better planted in the fall (they become bigger and stronger plants when planted then), but there are some that can also be planted in early spring and do just fine. Further, there are some that do well planted in early spring instead of fall because they cannot survive overwintering in my zone. Planting in both fall and spring can extend the bloom time of cool flowers.

Dianthus
Calendula
Orlaya

These birds here are feasting on the seeds of some of my plants, especially when other food sources might be buried under snow. It serves as a natural bird feeder without competition from the squirrels!
