Love these native flowers that are just starting to bloom! The first, false sunflower, is such a cheerful little flower that brings brightness to bouquets. And the much beloved echinacea keeps the garden blooms coming all summer long. Echinacea can be used in bouquets either with petals or after the petals have dropped with the spiky cone.

The best part of these and other native plants is that they are very drought tolerant and not fussy about soil quality, so once they are established they keep coming back without much effort for the gardener!

Happy Earth Day! Right now is a great time to get stared on an earth friendly garden. When you are thinking about getting plants for your summer garden, check out your local garden center for native plants to your region. Planting a few natives in your garden goes a long way in supporting the local ecosystem.

Flowering plants can also be a great way to support local pollinators. Incorporating flowering plants can be as easy as planting a packet of wildflower seeds in your garden. Now that the threat of frost has passed us in DC, go ahead and plant out seeds. Just keep the soil moist until they sprout.

Finally, although it can be tempting to use pesticides to get rid of pesky garden pests, in the long run going pesticide free is better for human health and the health of our planet.
